The investment will enhance AWS’s cloud infrastructure in the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region and introduce advanced technologies like GPUs and cloud management services. Vaishnaw said AWS is optimistic about India’s growth potential, and the investment is expected to create significant employment opportunities in Maharashtra. The expansion aligns with India’s push to strengthen digital infrastructure and support startups, enterprises, and government initiatives.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will invest $8.2 billion (approximately ₹68,000 crore) in Maharashtra by the end of fiscal year 2029-30, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced. The investment underscores AWS’s long-term commitment to strengthening cloud infrastructure in India, with a specific focus on the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region.

The minister shared the news while speaking to reporters, highlighting that AWS sees strong growth potential in India’s cloud computing sector. “They are very optimistic about growth in India,” Vaishnaw said, adding that the investment will bring cutting-edge technologies to the country, including advanced GPUs, cloud management services, and other high-performance computing capabilities.

The $8.2 billion investment, planned over the next several years, is expected to significantly enhance AWS’s cloud infrastructure capabilities in Maharashtra. The funds will go toward building data centers, upgrading existing infrastructure, and incorporating the latest technological advancements to support Indian businesses and startups in their digital transformation journeys.

Boost to Employment and Innovation

According to Vaishnaw, AWS’s expansion in Maharashtra will not only bolster India’s digital infrastructure but also create substantial employment opportunities in the state. The investment is anticipated to generate jobs across various domains, including data center operations, cloud engineering, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence (AI) development.

AWS has been steadily expanding its footprint in India, which is one of the fastest-growing cloud markets globally. The company’s Mumbai region, first launched in 2016, has become a critical hub for serving customers across sectors such as banking, e-commerce, healthcare, and government services.

Strengthening India’s Digital Ecosystem

This latest investment announcement aligns with India’s broader ambitions to become a global digital powerhouse. With increasing demand for data storage, computing power, and AI capabilities, AWS’s investment will further enhance India’s cloud ecosystem and provide businesses with scalable and secure infrastructure to innovate and expand.

The infusion of funds into Maharashtra is also expected to benefit local enterprises, startups, and government initiatives that rely heavily on cloud services to enhance operational efficiency and offer digital services to citizens.

AWS’s commitment to India comes at a time when the government is actively promoting initiatives like Digital India, Startup India, and Make in India, all of which are expected to benefit from stronger digital infrastructure and cutting-edge cloud technologies.

As AWS deepens its presence in Maharashtra, it reinforces India’s appeal as a key market for global technology giants and highlights the growing importance of digital infrastructure in driving economic growth and innovation in the country.
